Value Stream Mapping (VSM) is arguably the most revealing and impactful tool in the Lean practitioner's entire toolkit. In most large enterprises, operational waste is completely invisible to senior leadership because no single person truly understands the end-to-end workflow. When you finally map the current state of a business process—documenting every single wait time, departmental handoff, and rework loop—the sheer magnitude of the waste becomes impossible to ignore.

What a True Value Stream Map Reveals
